It’s easy to take our friends for granted. People come and go, new friends arrive, others marry, or drop out of your life then later return. That’s why I love throwing a Friendship Day party.

I don’t know about you, but I find the concept of friendship fascinating. How two random strangers develop into close comrades is really special and I think doesn’t get much attention.

We focus more on numbers of friends or not having enough friends, like we’re collecting stamps or something. I think it’s about time we changed that.

We love any excuse to party at Partycurrent and that’s why I love International Friendship Day that comes round every first Sunday of every August.

Although the greeting card industry and various countries in South America had a hand in its origins, Friendship Day is now celebrated worldwide. It’s not an official holiday but it should be.

I like throwing my Friendship Day party as a dinner. Here’s how you can also do it with these tips.

Dinner ideas for your Friendship Day party

Best place to start is the food.

Personally, I try to keep my menu focused on what your friends like to eat, just to keep the food on theme.

Make sure to stock your fridge with your friends’ favorite foods, so they can cook with them whilst at the party. Even if you know what your friends like to eat, it doesn’t hurt to double check just in case their dietary requirements might have changed.

Alternatively, you might have a regular dish in common, chosen from something you’ve all loved from eating out together or cooking together. If you do eat at a regular place, check if they do delivery. If not, make a big order of takeout.

Another idea I love is throwing a potluck. You can ask everyone to bring a favorite dish they love to cook for friends. If all of you love cooking, then why not create an original meal together just for Friendship Day.

How to invite your friends

The perfect Friendship Day party ideas for invitations are group Collage Invites.

You can create these from a collage of your friends out of different photos you have. Sort through your photos first, both digital and print. Not everyone you’re inviting will be in the same picture, so ask friends to send you their photos, if you’re stuck. Pick at least 10 of your best photos, then scan onto your computer. Use photo software (iPhoto, Canva) to create a collage, then print, glue to card.

Before sending your invites, make sure they include party time, date, location and contact info on your card and ask friends to ring with any dietary needs. If you need friends to bring stuff on the day such as old photos, video footage and personal mementos, mention this as well.

Turning your home into a friends’ haven

Decorations for your Friendship Day party ideas? It’s cheesy, but I like hanging up quotes about friendship Quotes. A couple of my favorites include:

“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.” – Douglas Pagels.

“Friendship isn’t a big thing – it’s a million little things.” – Author Unknown.

I also create a large photo wall of photos of different friends I’ve downloaded then gotten a local photo shop to print large versions of the photos then laminate.

There’s also the Friendship Table. If your friends are bringing mementos to celebrate friendship, you can set these aside on their own display table. Cover the with a white table cloth first, then scatter with gold glitter.

Activities for your Friendship Day party

Pick activities everyone can get involved in but make sure you avoid any cliques forming, especially if you’ve invited different friends from different parts of your life. Try and get everyone to mingle.

Icebreakers are a great way of warming up the crowd, getting people comfortable with each other. You can use a combination of icebreaker questions or games. When it comes to games, go for non-competitive games, to give everyone the chance to feel equal and involved. Include fun, silly or parlor games.

Scrapbooking is another fun idea. Decide on your theme first, after everyone’s confirmed they’re coming. Then ask them to contribute with related photos and personal items they might’ve kept, e.g. Movie stubs, receipt from a favorite dinner, music. Themes could include the Joys of Your Friendship, Top 20 Friendship Moments, or reproducing a favorite shared memory using photos.

Friendship Cards are also a nice touch. Mail a card to every friend in your address book, no matter how far they live or when you last saw them. Or send them a small gift with a personal note.

Create a movie marathon filled with videos your friends have made in the past of each other. These can include footage from parties and get togethers, random shorts filmed on a smartphone, arty films made in your spare time, slideshows of photos that feature your friends, or just favourite movies all of you enjoy. Don’t forget the popcorn!

The Gallery of Friendship idea is a bit cheesy but I’m going there anyway. You’d be creating a digital photo gallery of your friendships throughout time. Make sure everyone knows to bring their own favorite photos. Set up a scanner, so print photos can be included, then post the gallery online or create a special CD slideshow to mail out to eveyone.

Create a playlist of songs you and your friends remember from time together, for example roadtrip music, camping at a music festival, the upbeat songs you play when you all feel sad. Ask your friends to bring their favorite CDs. Talking music together is great fun and helps people bond.

One final thing to do with all your friends

Get everyone together for a group photo, which you can either send them the next day via email, or print and frame and mail to each person involved. The print/frame/mail option might be a bit costly, and smartphone photos are easy; but having something physical to remember the day by can be a nice touch.
